Women's Help Center begins community garden

Plants went into the ground in Johnstown Wednesday at the Women's Help Center.

Residents helped fill raised garden beds with different types of fruits, vegetables and herbs.

The Women's Help Center recently fixed up the garden and planter beds after receiving a grant.

Women's Help Center's executive director Roxann Tyger said that the garden will have more positive outcomes than just providing residents with food.

Tyger said, "I think gardening is therapy in a way, too. And just tending to something, helping it grow, nurturing it, getting people outside; and I think there's a really nice connection to be able to grow your own food and enjoy it afterwards. You can see the fruits of your labor, literally."

Tyger said they're also making plans for green space in the vacant lot adjacent to their transitional housing building along McMillen Street.
