The Rensselaer County incident happened at around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, in North Greenbush.

According to North Greenbush Police, officers watched a vehicle pass them on North Greenbush Road near Dudley Heights going 112 miles per hour. Seconds later, another car passed at 110 miles per hour.

The second vehicle then lost control and struck several mailboxes and garbage cans before spinning into a tree.

Officers arrested the driver of the first car nearly a mile away. He was identified as 18-year-old Evan Coon, of Brunswick.

The driver of the second vehicle, 18-year-old Daniel Goldston, of Troy, was also arrested. Neither he nor his 15- and 16-year-old passengers were injured in the crash.

Police said nobody in either car was wearing a seatbelt at the time.

Both men were charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and illegal speed contest, all misdemeanors.

Goldston was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

“This was an incredibly lucky situation,” said North Greenbush Police Chief David Keevern. “Every year, we see teenagers in our county dying in car crashes and it’s a miracle this didn’t end the same way.”
