Skating club of Johnstown holds Holidayz on Ice Public Skate, Basket Raffles, & Ice Show
While many folks associate Johnstown with hockey, another smaller community also takes to the ice. One that is no less athletic but also creative and showcases a unique art form.
The Skating club of Johnstown held their Holidayz Ice Show on Sunday. This show is the biggest fundraising event for the Skating Club of Johnstown and featured a basket raffle, vendors and of course a figure skating show that had skaters ranging from 3 years old to some even in their 60’s.
Alexis Capoullez started skating when she was 6 years old here at the arena and now she is the director of the program and a coach to many of our aspiring skaters. She spoke about the importance that this sport has to the young people in our area.
“Skating here is important in a small town," said Alexis Capouellez, Skating Director for Skating Club of Johnstown. "We don’t have a lot to do for any children in the area. It keeps them healthy, it keeps them active it gives them friends and a family that they have while their families are working or extremely busy they can come to the rink and they always have somebody there to help them no matter what it is.”
Addie Oswalt is only 16 years old and already a coach herself. She started when she was 6 and now teaches some of the youngest skaters in the program. She explains how figure skating helps those that practice it.
“Honestly I think it’s confidence," said Addie Oswalt, figure skater and coach. "The more that they start skating you can see how much more comfortable they’re getting, and they feel so proud about themselves whenever they learn a new move and I think that’s really cool.”
She also comments on how rare it seems that people are able to catch a glimpse into the world of figure skating.
“It’s not something that you see often," said Oswalt. "I feel like we don’t have too many shows or maybe people don’t hear about the competitions as much so getting the show out here this year through Facebook and stuff people really came out and you just don’t see it very often.”
