Local car washes see spike in business as drivers try to 'wash' away winter
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Now that we are beginning to have some warm weather, people are ready to put winter behind them which for most means finally getting a car wash.
At Symon’s Auto Wash during this time of year, there is typically a line of cars wrapped around the building and even sometimes out onto the road waiting their turn to wash away what winter left behind on their cars.
The owner of Symon’s Auto Wash, Mark Symon says as soon as the snow melts away his business gets crazy. The reason behind it all- to help keep vehicles in good shape and to avoid damaging cars from all the salt and chemicals which treat the roads during winter. Symon says they wash the underbodies of cars which helps to get the salt off vehicles to prevent rusting. He says the best way his business prepares for their busy time of year is to make sure they have enough employees to get cars through the wash as fast and efficiently as possible.
“Right now, with the COVID it’s tough getting employees. I get school kids for the weekend but during the week a lot of people are collecting, or they’re afraid of COVID but that’s about all we need, as long as we have the employees we are in good shape,” said Symon.
The best time to go to try and avoid the long lines and waiting, Symon says, “the earlier the better.” Symon’s Auto Wash opens up at 8am.
“When the weather breaks and people see how bad their cars look from winter, we do a lot of detailing. As a matter of fact, that’s what I’m doing right now is a lot of detail calls because they know we get busy and they want to get their cars done as soon as possible,” he added.
