Bus carrying visiting womens hockey team destroyed by fire
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WJAC) – The charter bus carrying a visiting university’s women’s ice hockey team burst into flames as it entered Penn State’s campus, according to an Alpha Fire Department official.
Fire Director Shawn Kauffman told 6 News no one was injured, and the team’s equipment was already at Pegula Ice Hockey Arena.
It happened just before noon on Friday at the intersection of Porter Road and Park Avenue, right beside Beaver Stadium.
Kauffman said the charter bus was from Rochester, N.Y. and was a total loss.
Members of the Rochester Institute of Technology, or RIT, communications department confirmed the bus was carrying its team to the arena and stressed no one was hurt. One spokesperson said the team was able to walk to Pegula from the fire location. The RIT communications team said the fire did not impact the team’s arrival for the game.
The Penn State Women’s Hockey team is scheduled to play RIT Friday and Saturday afternoon.
